A beautiful game played in the Aeroflot International Open 2015 between Vadim Zvjaginsev (2658) and Benjamin Bok (2587), here black recklessly played 21.Be7 to defend the d pawn , but he clearly missed the next move by white, can you guess it :

I belive when solving some tactics of great games, you look up the game from which it arose, trying somhow to enter the mind of that wizard and figuring out the strategy and the preceding moves the allowed him to execute such amazing move

unfortunately white made a bad decision by taking f5 with the wrong pawn, what would you do here ?

this is why you should study some basic endgame, really losing a winning endgame is more painful than losing with some kind of blunder early
hi folks, the US Chess Championship has started today, round one has finished with the favourite candidates Hikaru and So winning it.

here is Hikaru game, Conrad; his opponent was surely drunk when he played 25.Nf5, "nakening" his king, well, guess what Hikaru played after :

US Chess Championship 2015-round 2:

Super GMs playing like patzers !

this game has just ended, what an ugly ending technic by such strong players ,the only excuse is that they played it at somewhat time pressure,if you go to CB :http://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2015-usch-m/02-Shankland_Samuel_L-So_Wesley you can see a blood path at the end ! I importe this game http://en.lichess.org/f8MVFvWx#79 because it needs to be studied by any serious chess player who want to improve at handling the knight in the ending, you can export it to your chess engine and played it with a lot of possible variations and see yourself how it should have been played :))
Wesley So (2800 ELO)... Then some dumb people will claim that nowadays chess players are stronger than before. Just look at the games. Capablanca or Fischer (2785 ELO, in his peak) never did stupid mistakes like that.

ELOinflation + OpeningMemorization
Every sports fan has right to compare past greats to present stars but lets not forget that even though its same game of chess, it is different level of opponents and more developed game these days. Modern demands and situations mean they are not comparable in any meaningful way. I must admit I am biased against Fischer since I respect more long term domination compared to retiring at your prime. If Caruana retired after his sinqufield cup win, apart from comparisons to fischer, many would have talked how he would have went on to defeat Carlsen. Point being, if Fischer at least dominated Karpov - and then retired -a better argument at greatest ever could be made.
