but first move Kg6 or Rf8+, which also leads to mate in 3 - considered wrong

I agree. I played 1. Rf8+ with the idea 1...Kh7 2. Re8 (a8-e8 all work) 2...Kh6, 3. Rh8#. This is a forced mate-in-three, but it was marked wrong.
