Still better than OCR-based CAPTCHAs, because it forces people to program exploits specifically for lichess. No other site I know of (at least, not a big one), uses chess-based CAPTCHAs. If you just drop in reCAPTCHA, chances are it willbe exploited -- a lot.
#10 "annoying and useless" these are words I would use for regular captchas. These actually makes you practice some chess, which is sort of the purpose of using the site in the first place.
Using nocaptcha recaptcha might be an interesting alternative, as it's just a checkbox. It might would feed data to google and probably give them opportunity to spy on people though.
I don't think the chess captchas is all that secure in the current state, but I still like them.
